Where the Fae Play Tutorial

This tutorial was written by Amber Howard on August 28, 2015. Any resemblances to other tutorials are completely coincidental. Scripting and translating of this tutorial is forbidden. Do not copy and paste this tutorial anywhere else on the internet. Please link back to the main blog instead.

In this tutorial I used the artwork of Brooke Gillette.

You can purchase this artwork and a license through ADI. 

Please do not use this or any scrap kit without purchasing first.

Supplies needed:

PaintShopPro — I used X7 but any version will work.
Tube of choice.
Scrap kit of choice — I used “Where the Fae Play” by MellieBeans.  
Mask of choice — I used WSL 281 by Weescotslass Creations.
Font of choice — I used Unthrift Second.

Plugins needed:

Eye Candy 4 — Gradient Glow
Lokas Artistic Effects — Cotton

Ready? Set? Go!

Open a 400x400 canvas, and flood fill white.

Open a frame of choice,

or FR04 from the “Where the Fae Play” scrap kit.

Resize the chosen from to 325 pixels wide,

and paste as a new layer onto the canvas.

Rename this layer Frame.

Grab the magic wand tool,

and click once inside of the frame.

Add a new raster layer, and arrange below the frame.

Open a paper of choice,

or PP02 from the “Where the Fae Play” scrap kit.

Copy the paper, and make sure the blank layer is active.

Selections – Expand by 8 pixels.

Paste INTO selection.

Selections – Select None.

Duplicate the paper layer.

Adjust – Blur – Blur More.

Change the settings to Hard or Soft Light,

and then merge into the original layer.

Rename this layer Paper.

Open a foliage element of choice,

or E11 from the “Where the Fae Play” scrap kit.

Resize the element to 325 pixels high if the element is tall,

or 325 pixels wide if the element is wide.

I resized E11 to 325 pixels high.

Paste as a new layer above the frame layer,

and arrange on the right side of the frame if the element is tall,

arrange on the bottom of the frame if the element is wide.

Grab the eraser tool with the following settings:

Shape: Circular, Size: 50, Hardness: 50, Step: 10, Density: 100, Thickness: 100, Rotation: 0, Opacity 100%, Smart Edge unchecked.

Carefully erase any of the foliage element that hangs over the bottom or edge of the frame layer.

For example, I’ve circled the portion that you would erase if using E11 from the “Where Fae Play” scrap kit:

Once you are finished erasing, add a drop shadow of choice,

or the one I used with the following settings:

V: 4, H: 2, Opacity: 65, Blur: 12.00.

Duplicate the foliage layer.

On the duplicate:

Image – Free Rotate – Rotate by 90 degrees right,

all layers and single layer unchecked.

Now, arrange the duplicate foliage layer on the bottom of the frame if it was tall,

or the right side of the frame if it was wide.

If your foliage was wider, you might have to erase a bit more.

Make sure the duplicate branch lines up with the original branch.

Merge the two foliage layers together.

Rename this layer Leaves.

Open a flower element of choice,

Or E13 from the “Where the Fae Play” scrap kit.

Resize as needed.

I resized E13 by 25%, all layers unchecked.

Paste and arrange the flowers over the corner of the Leaves layer.

Apply a drop shadow of choice,

or the one I used with the following settings:

V: 4, H: 2, Opacity: 25, Blur: 12.00.

Rename this layer Flowers.

Open a swirl/ribbon/gem element of choice,

or E21 from the “Where the Fae Play” scrap kit.

Resize as needed.

I resized E21 to 325 pixels wide.

Paste as a new layer at the top of the layer palette,

so it’s easier to grab and arrange the element along the bottom of the canvas.

Once happy with the placement,

rename this layer Pearls (or something that fits,)

and arrange below the Leaves layer.

Open another swirl type element of choice,

or E33 from the “Where the Fae Play” scrap kit.

Resize as needed, or to 325 pixels wide.

Paste as a new layer at the top of the layer palette,

so it’s easier to grab and arrange the element along the right side of the canvas.

Once happy with the placement,

rename this layer Swirl,

and arrange below the Leaves layers.

Grab the Eraser tool again,

and erase any portions of the swirl that stick out from underneath the bottom.

Open a butterfly element of choice,

or E50 from the “Where the Fae Play” scrap kit.

Resize as needed, or by 20%, all layers unchecked.

Paste as a new layer at the top of the layers palette,

and arrange over the flowers.

Apply a drop shadow of choice,

or the one I used with the following settings:

V: 4, H: 2, Opacity: 45, Blur: 12.00.

Rename this layer Butterfly.

Open another swirl element of choice,

or E14 from the “Where the Fae Play” scrap kit.

Resize as needed, or by 20%, all layers unchecked.

Paste as a new layer at the top of the layer palette,

so it’s easier to grab and arrange the swirl around one portion of the butterfly wing.

Apply a drop shadow of choice,

or the one I used with the following settings:

V: 4, H: 2, Opacity: 15, Blur: 12.00.

Duplicate the swirl layer,

and on the duplicate

Image – Mirror.

Rearrange the duplicate so that it swirls around the other portion of the wing.

Merge the two layers together,

rename this layer Wing Swirls,

and arrange beneath the Butterfly layer in the layer palette.

Open a sparkle element of choice,

or E32 from the “Where the Fae Play” scrap kit.

Resize as needed, or to 350 pixels wide.

Paste as a new layer at the top of the layer palette.

Image – Mirror.

Image – Flip.

Arrange along the top of the frame.

Rename this layer Sparkle,

and then arrange beneath the Leaves layer.

Open another paper of choice,

or PP09 from the “Where the Fae Play” scrap kit.

Resize to 400x400 pixels,

and paste as a new layer just above the white background.

Apply a mask of choice,

or WSL Mask 281 with the following settings checked:

Fit to canvas, source luminance, hide all mask.

Right click on the layer in your palette.

Merge as Group.

Rename this layer Mask.

Open a tube of choice,

and resize as needed.

I did not resize mine because it fit just right in the frame.

Paste as a new layer above the paper layer,

and arrange to your liking within the frame.

Grab the magic wand tool again,

make the frame layer active

and click inside of the frame once.

Selections – Expand by 8 pixels.

Make the tube layer active,

Selections – Invert.

Hit the delete key once.

Selections – Select None.

Duplicate the tube layer,

and on the duplicate:

Adjust – Blur – Gaussian Blur at 7.00.

Change the settings of this layer to Hard Light.

Duplicate the frame layer,

And on the duplicate

Adjust – Brightness/Contrast – Brightness and Contrast with the following settings:

Brightness: -255, Contrast: 0.

Adjust – Blur – Gaussian Blur at 7.00.

Choose a pixel font of choice,

add your credits, license, and tagger’s mark.

Choose a font of choice or use Unthrift Second.

Foreground null and background a color of choice.

Add your name.

When happy with the placement and size, convert to raster layer.

Duplicate the name layer.

On the duplicate layer,

Apply Lokas Artistic Effects – Cotton with the default settings.

On the original layer,

apply a medium 3.00 thick gradient glow in a complimentary color.

Apply a drop shadow of choice.

Delete the white background layer,

save as a .PNG, and you’re done!
